Catching Up

Ok, so I've had a problem keeping my own rule about posting once a week. But that's ok because now I actually have a couple of things to talk about. The first is, I finally was able to get a decent picture of the complex we live in now. The weather is starting the shape up and the high has been around 65-70, so we finally get some decent weather for a change. Any ways, here's a picture of our building:

We just bought a propane grill and had to put it together. Yes, the complex still looks like this, no it didn't blow up.....yet. But Rachael loves it. We had a charcoal grill at the old place, but it was such a cheapy that it didn't let enough oxygen into the mix to start a fire!

As for Rachael, she's starting a new job this week. She's been working at Talbots, but I'm sure you all know how tough the retail business can be, especially now. Her new job is at a country club, where she is the front-desk receptionist. Basically, she takes care of the office-related stuff, books tee times, greets the guests, etc. She's excited about it and from what she tells me, it sounds like she will enjoy her new job.

That's it for now, but next week I'll reveal our vacation plans for July.

Peoples Girls Take Gymnastic Gold

This past Saturday May 3rd, Emma and Grayson won medals for their year end performance at their Gymnastic Meet.  Emma has taken Gymnastics for two years now, while this is Grayson's first year. Their performance included work on the high balance beam, the parallel bars, and cart wheels and tumbling on the Gym floor. I think by the picture you can see they are proud of their accomplishments. They really did a great job. The event fielded over 50+ competitors and lasted 2 hours.

They've both decided that this will be their last year in Gymnastics. Emma wants to pursue "Clogging" (at the same studio), and Grayson wants to devote a greater amount of time to Girl Scouts. We hope everyone has a great start to their month of May this week! Stay in touch.

Things I remember/Quote

"What lies behind you and what lies before you are tiny matters compared to what lies within you."
— Ralph Waldo Emerson

Above is one of my favorite quotes and just wanted to share with all of you.

Today I’m just going to talk about some things that I remember as I’m in one of those moods today. If any of you want to ask questions or make comments about any of the following please let me hear from you and I will do my best to answer them.

  • Places Papaw and Mamaw Peoples lived; Bear Creek, Chatham County, NC. In Greensboro, Prescott St., Grayland Ave, Gregory St., Bilbro St., Rex Court. (my Dad and Mom rented 2 rooms on Bilbro for $15 a month).
  • The back yard at Bilbro St. where all my cousins lived with me during the war years had a small garden, Fig tree, and Grape vines and was fenced in. A grocery store was only about a block away from us and we kids were always going there to spend our pennies and nickels (when we had them). I carried a glass milk jar with me all the time filled with marbles and fell on it one day trying to catch up with my cousins and ended up in the hospital getting stitches in my chest! The man that owned that store took me and Uncle Clayton fishing one weekend at Myrtle Beach and we dropped the anchor in the boat and had a leak and had to come to shore before we all drowned!
  • Aunt Mozelle and her Husband Luther Young lived in an upstairs apartment for a while off of Market St. I was told this by my mother (Clara) and as I’ve stated before they were always close.
  • I remember when Aunt Mozelle, Uncle Clayton, (sometimes Aunt Norma) and also later when my Dad moved back with them at 421 Rex Court the big thing was buying the food for the coming week! Everybody who had a job or income of some sort would all “pitch in” money and make a list of what food was needed. Someone would walk to the old A&P Grocery store that was located at that time on Gorrell Street and shop for everything and then hire a taxi to take them home with all the bags. My Uncle Clayton had me go with him one time for this and I can tell you I never saw so many groceries in my life! This was a 3-4 hour job and thank goodness for the taxi!!!!
  • When my Dad was sober (more about this in another family fact) and he was not playing music on the guitar, he and Aunt Mozelle would always have a book they were reading. It was very rare that either one did not have a book that they were working on. I guess that is one reason to this day that my brothers and I read so much. I’m not sure what authors that Aunt Mozelle enjoyed reading, but Dad was always reading mostly westerns, Louis L’Amour in particular and I have now read over 100 of his and found them to be very entertaining in a very clean and simple way.
  • I used to talk a lot to Papaw when we would be sitting on the porch at Rex Court about many things. As most of you know most of our family either smoked or used stuff and he told me that he used to smoke, but gave it up for stuff! I don’t know which was worst but at that time nobody was concerned about tobacco use! I also remember asking him one time why he didn’t go to church. He answer me by saying; “Wade you don’t need to go to church in order to believe in god”. Based on things that happened later I can see why he didn’t want to go to the preacher’s church who had become a close friend of the Peoples family! I’ll get to that later in another Family Fact!
  • I along with my wife Markie (who was pregnant with my son Mark) and my oldest son Jeff we were visiting him the night he died. Aunt Mozelle, Aunt Norma, and Mamaw were all there that night. Papaw and I were sitting on the couch talking when he put his head on my shoulder. I thought at first he had just dozed off, but within a few seconds he raised his head up and told me he felt like he had been a sleep for hours! Mamaw told me that she had been trying to get him to go to the doctor, but he would not listen to them and would I try to convince him to let me call an ambulance to take him to the emergency room. He told me that if I would call them he would go, I did and you all know the rest of the story, he died on the way to the hospital from a heart attack!
  • Well I think that’s enough for this week. Please let Ross and I know what you would like to see on this site or any improvements we can make. Anyone need help with the Family Tree? Let us know and maybe that would be something we can give you a quick lesson on. Everyone that receives these Family Facts has some family within that site and can add to it when they log in with your passwords!

"Crash" Weekend for the Upstate SC Peoples Family

Hello everyone! We just got back from our first "CRASH" Retreat - (Congregational Retreat and Social Hiatus) - with our Church Family. We traveled to Flat Rock, NC to the Bonclarken Conference Center. It was one of those "Adventure Activity" Retreats which included Caving, Climbing Towers, High Rope Courses, Zip Line Traversing, and Hiking. A place like this is NOT a vacation when you've got a 5 and 7 year old. Whew! I'm beat and need "another" vacation! Jen was part of the CRASH committee and was busy organizing many of the children events - while I took the girls over to the Dupont Forest and WaterFall area. Climbing up to the water falls was tough for EVERY age group - not to mention the Dad's (like me) with the 5 year olds that ask to be carried while climbing a ridge. Ugh! It was worth every step upon arriving. We played around the water falls for the afternoon. Many places were prime for just "jumping in" for a swim - but it was too cold. We've already planned to return during the summer for a swim and to again watch the fly fishermen perform their amazing techniques. Grayson put on a back pack for the hike - along with binoculars and bug catcher holder - a true naturalist! She caught really beautiful butterflies and showed them to everyone, and them released them back to the wild. Talk about a young understanding of catch and release! Emma hung with the teenage girls - and made many new "older" friends who loved having her along - and held her hand a lot for the journey. Here they are at the second of three steps of the falls posing for the camera. I think you can tell that they are as different as day and night just by looking at the photos. As a Dad, I had a GREAT time and tons of fun with them.Until next time!Mark
